Role synopsis

Our client and their partner are developing technology to manufacture biobutanol, an advanced biofuel. A demonstration unit is now operational and experimentation has now commenced in order to produce the data needed to design commercial biobutanol facilities in the US, Brazil and the EU. The technical demonstration plant has been built at the Hull Research and Technology Centre (HRTC) and is owned by a partner of our clients and a joint venture.

They are seeking to recruit an experienced Mechanical Engineer to provide mechanical engineering for the Biobutanol Demonstration Plant, so that the facility can safely execute the required experimental programme. The role will also contribute significantly to the operation of the facility, including trouble shooting, reliability and engineering assurance.

Key accountabilities

Located in the Hull Research Technology Centre (HRTC), and a part of the operations team, the Mechanical Engineer will complete early stage design and cost estimates for any new build equipment. You will work with appropriate Project Teams to ensure new build equipment is fit for purpose, and as part of the team, commission any new equipment. The Mechanical Engineer is involved in the design, cost and completion of any modifications ensuring all engineering standards are met, and also in planning and implementing shutdowns on major equipment. You will arrange required craft and inspection resources as required to meet the project requirements, and work with the HRTC Group Engineer and other mechanical engineers within HRTC to ensure that engineering standards are met.

In this role, you will act as a MAF approver for the team, and you might be required to coach and mentor junior engineering staff, as well as providing support and cover to other mechanical engineers. You will ensure the highest standards of HSSE in all aspects of the role.

Essential Education

To apply to this role, you should hold a degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience with appropriate qualifications. Ideally, you will be chartered in Mechanical Engineering.

Essential experience and job requirements

To apply to this role, you will need to be able to show your experience in pilot plant or commercial plant operations in the engineering field, combined with mechanical engineering design experience gained in a similar environment.

To be successful in this role, you will be a credible and authentic communicator, with the ability to influence positively across a wide range of stakeholders. Your ability to operate effectively in a delivery-focussed and often fast-paced environment will be evident, and you should be able to demonstrate capability in working with a variety of other disciplines and functions in a structured and collaborative way

Desirable criteria qualifications

Experience in new process or product development would be highly desirable, and fermentation experience would be very beneficial in this role.

Role Synopsis

Key Accountabilities

The Mechanical Engineer Is A Key Part Of The Multi-discipline Projects Team, And Provides Support To The Project Lead Engineer, The PM Or SPA In The Delivery Of Works Projects Within The Site Capex Plan.

BASIC FUNCTIONS RESPONSIBILITIES

- Review and contribute in the preparation of a Project Execution Plan and prepare Project Procurement Plan including procurement, expediting, inspection and logistics plans.
- Establish project specific Terms Conditions, when required, in conjunction with legal department.
- Prepare project specific Approved Manufacturers List (AML)
- Prepare and maintain a Project Purchasing Supervisors Report for the duration of the project.
- Prepare and monitor Request for Quotations (RFQs) on receipt of a Material Requisitions (MRs).
- Expedite supplier quotations
- Review and analyze suppliers quotations in conjunction with requisitioning engineers.
- Prepare commercial bid tabulations in accordance with established format.
- Organize and chair pre-award/clarification meetings with suppliers.
- Negotiate the best possible price and delivery with suppliers in a professional and ethical manner.
- Monitor the progress of and expedite suppliers during manufacturing
- Manage trade compliance including Incoterms and customs issues.
- Manage freight forwarding activities
- Review, action and verify invoices in a timely and accurate manner in conjunction with the assigned project accountant
- Co-ordinate visits of suppliers to site location for commissioning, repair and warranty activities.
- Organize close-out meetings with suppliers.
- Prepare a Purchasing close-out report for the project

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIREMENTS

- Bachelor degree, preferably in engineering or business
- CPSM / CPM preferred
- Organized and disciplined individual with well-developed communication skills.
- Demonstrated an ability to accomplish established objectives within a diverse corporate environment including within an international environment.
- Must be able to handle multiple projects and priorities and be confident enough to make difficult decisions.
- Comfortable with detail and possess a strong system focus as well as a reputation for integrity, maturity, and an ability to work under pressure in a fast paced multi-faceted business environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills required to deal effectively with operational management throughout the organization.
- Leadership capability to develop and supervise a quality staff, setting direction, managing issues, and bringing projects to fruition.
